Day Nine. Today has been a little off. A few little troubles as we were getting ready packing up the hotel room such as a lost key. Somehow nothing seemed to be moving as smoothly as it had the previous eight days. And when we got to the car, packed it while rain patted us gently on the head, turned the Explorer on, we became aware of a serious obstacle: we had a flat tire. It seems that somewhere along our driving journeys we rolled right on over a screw that punctured a tire. Luckily we discovered this while still parked in the hotel's parking lot and not cruising the highway at seventy-five miles per hour.
But within a little while, the tow truck dispatched to us arrived and led us to a Firestone not far from where we had been lodging.
The issue is this: we have a spare tire in the back of the car, and dad can change it himself, however it is not a full size tire and these temporaries are not meant to be driven at speeds over 50mph. This is why we called for a tow truck. And as the universe would have it, the Firestone did not have any tires that fit our car: option two gone. Although the kind people who work at the Firestone filled the tire with the air it lacked. Since it is a slow leak, we managed to reach Vancouver, Washington, which is just across the Columbia River from Portland, where there is a Ford dealer. We were planning on seeing Vancouver anyway, so everything worked out even though we are set back a day.
We usually experience one crisis per trip, so I guess this means that the rest of the vacation will be relatively hardship free. Hopefully, I have not just jinxed us.
Tomorrow morning we will get the Explorer fitted with a brand new tire. (Or so we hope. Let the dealer have a tire!)
Because it has been raining steadily since dawn, if not long before the sun peaked over the horizon, we have not done much in the way of sightseeing today. Though this does not seem to distress anyone; we got enough of that yesterday in Portland. My parents and I did go to the mall to pick up bathing suits since we intend on driving along the coast more in the latter half of this road trip and there is a hotel with saltwater pool and hot tub. Of course none of us packed a bathing suit because it's still more of less winter. So we made a slight detour to the mall and began our preparations for summer months a little early.
For the rest of today we will most likely occupy the hotel room. The boys will venture into the virtual world of World of Warcraft; mom and I will probably glue our eyes to the pages of a book or two. A rest day is not a bad thing on vacation, it is vacation after all.
