The last trail, Cucumber Gap, was supposed to have been an easy, short hike but in reality, it was the longest (7 miles) and most demanding out of the four hikes we did. This hike, unlike the other three, is a loop; meaning you don't hike to an end point, but continue following the trail until you curve around to the starting point. Nick, after the first two hikes, said he believed there was no "loop hike" in the park, so my parents found Cucumber Gap for him. This trail became a favorite of my dad and I. The scenery changed, starting with rivers and streams; changing to a forest hike as we curved along the mountain; and then to wide open views of mountains and open blue sky.
Having forgotten the map of the area in the car, we nearly got lost; the trail ended at an unfamiliar road, but we soon found are way back to the car parked down the road.
Not long after returning to the car, we quickly packed up the car and started the drive homeward bound. We left for home earlier than originally planned. The last day was going to rain and we all wanted to be back in our own beds with our homemade coffee, meals and tea. SO, we drove through the dark and snow to arrive home at midnight and fall into bed.
